How did you mobilize your staff?

They flooded into the office. We have one young journalist who lives very close by, another whose mother had lunch with two of the victims every day for many years. What were your reactions as a Catholic? I have been deeply marinated in Judaism.

Scoop: MEET THE PRESS on NBC - Sunday, April 20,

We have virulent anti-Semitism here. How could that be possible? I thought of my daughters. They would be so broken about this. I love both traditions. And David, yours as a Jew? The impulses you have as journalist, and the impulses you have as a Jew, are inseparable and indistinguishable.

Teaching and sharing messages of hope and compassion.

They are the same. I would add comfort. It was clear in a newsroom with an unusually small group of Jewish journalists what my identity was. It would stun, horrify and amuse my rabbi daughter to know that I was regarded as the authority on Jewish ritual and Jewish life! Cindy, did something shift for you?

Anything that people who are not Jewish read about World War II, and the ghetto — you just had this feeling. This feels like that. It is also one that makes people feel hopeless and, on other hand, energized.

What bothers me the most is that the people who were shot, most of them, were elderly. These were bulwarks of that temple. As journalists, you are both standing at the intersection of two powerful trends: How do you assess this moment? If you believe as journalists in the Bill of Rights — where the freedom of religion is even before freedom of the press — and the Declaration of Independence, and the tenets of our system, then you believe you have this obligation and role in this society that is sacred, noble and ennobling.

And those are many of the tenets of Judaism. Trump has accused Soros, without evidence, of paying for protesters at his rallies. He made anti-Semitic statements during the shooting and targeted Jews on social media, according to a federal law enforcement official. We knew it could happen here — any here, anywhere — when we learned that six were killed in the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City last year. Now we know it can happen here, as anywhere, because it has.

President Trump! And Other Plausible Impossibilities

Karl Williams, chief medical examiner of Allegheny County, listed the names of 11 victims, which range in age from 54 to Bowers, who had 21 guns registered to his name, according to Representative Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania.

Officials said he was not known to law enforcement before the shooting, and a search of the Pennsylvania judiciary database shows only a traffic violation in his name.

Bowers took to Gab, a social network that bills itself as a being dedicated to free speech and which is increasingly popular among alt-right activists and white nationalists. It was on Gab where he found a like-minded community, reposting messages from Nazi supporters. Bowers lived about a minute drive south of the synagogue in a brick apartment complex on a dead-end street, where he was frequently spotted smoking cigarettes outside.

And trying to create laws around that is not the way that we should govern. We should try to stop irrational behavior from happening at the forefront. And not try to create laws around irrational behavior to continue. Game 5 is tonight at 8: Managers do it all the time, big mistake! As recently as March, we actually conducted a site visit there with our protective security advisor in the area.

This is something we often do. Somebody comes in to a service in a synagogue, what can you do? We will continue to do that. In some cases, the advice is to shelter in place, to some is to orderly evacuate, depends on the circumstances but you should always listen to the individuals there in charge who will direct you.

What I can assure you is if there are additional perpetrators, they will also be brought to justice. President Trump has made that same case. Do you see any connection between the shooter motivated by that and the case the president has been making?

But The Washington Post obtained hundreds of public posts from and from Columbia University social media researcher Jonathan Albright, who downloaded them Friday before Facebook removed the information.

It would also be a major disruption even by the standards of an ever-churning administration — possibly creating new confusion across departments and agencies and risking multiple bloody Senate confirmation fights. Trump is widely expected to oust Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whom he has criticized for months.
