Jakarta - March How do you think of yourself: I trained as a designer but I consider myself more likely as an alchemist who experiments. What is the inspiration behind your design? Is it personal, spiritual, or natural?

I consider the three terms bound together … I strongly rely upon instinct and intuition in order to elaborate what I learn every day from my experiences and from other people creations. However it starts as a desire, or a visionmost of the time a desire to connect and to be connected as well as to understand and translate the culture we leave innot anymore geographically specific.

I am interested in the contemporarity of the human existence that we all share at this point in time. In this interview Susanna unveils something of her inspiration, her motivation and her insight. I consider Bali as an important balancing entity. In a different way, Jakartans are our customers. And Jakarta is a surprisingly adventurous cluster of human diversity where I find myself always sparked by the urban buzz.

I was born in Rome, and before moving to Bali I leaved most of my life as a city person, used to traffic and fast pace.

When did you arrive in Indonesia? Tell us about your best experiences. There was a sense of humbleness matched by a complete absence of judgement. I volunteered in the hospital and witnessed it first hand… there was never any blame and as a result, the deep nature of the Balinese came through.

This could not happen anywhere else… as westerners we sometimes try to emulate such spirit, try but we inevitably fail upon the lack of acceptance. The way the Balinese reacted was for me mind blowing. Jakarta - March 13 What about your worst? Have here been times you felt like leaving? The most challenging task is to keep service and standards high — training people educated in one culture to understand and implement standars that are given for granted by an other culture can be challenging and time consuming: Cultures meet through mutual respect and apreciation.

Apreciation grows with time and knowledge, it comes with the understanding of what is the impossible thing to ask or espect. Human factor is the key and great teams are made of diverse individuals who share the same goals, ultimately. I feel very accomplished when I realize that Biasa success is due to a good team work which is possible when everyone involved feels as an important part of that creation.

On the level of fashion design I suppose that the formula is right: The brand reflects a strong sense of style without imposing the designer personality. Biasa loves independent thinkers. Will there be another brand emerging? On the art front, you seem to be more active in bali than Jakarta.

What do you get out of this aspect of your life? I am based in Bali, which I know better and where the tourism flow inspired me to showcase Indonesian contemporary art to a public that I thought would be still unaware of the infinite facets that this country has to offer and probably interested in viewing what I was interested in. What about you personally: Where do you live? I live happily in Bali. My children, respectively, 19 and 17 are in school in America and Europe.

I watched comedies, dramas, musicals, shows, mime, dance and even monologues. The depth of performing arts in London is without parallel in the world and is matched by the cultural offerings as well.

The museums of London, the galleries, the monuments, the events, the festivals, the history are just astonishing, and as I paraded the family around London last year I found not only had it not diminished, the whole scene had expanded and exploded beyond the imagination. What has this go to do with Jakarta? There are museums of interest, but far from mature and well organised, there are galleries and exhibitions which are worth visiting, there are festivals and events which are worth attending.

This is much understood and appreciated by the delightful Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Aurora Tambunan, who is in charge of Tourism and Culture and who I was fortunate to interview for this issue.
